New York Islanders News & Updates

In the third game of the series, Ilya Sorokin was the starting goaltender for the Islanders but was substituted early on due to his underwhelming performance. Semyon Varlamov came in relief and managed to save all eight shots he faced. Despite this effort, the team still faced a 3-2 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Islanders' coach, Patrick Roy, chose not to single out Sorokin for the loss, emphasizing that accountability was a team-wide responsibility.

Despite being replaced, Varlamov showed understanding for Roy's decision, having been the starting goalie in the series' first two games.

Compared to his prior achievements, Sorokin's current season has not met expectations, yet he remains under contract with the Islanders for an additional eight years.

Roy regards Varlamov as the more trustworthy option between the posts, drawing parallels to his own experiences with goaltending dynamics in Montreal, where he and Brian Hayward were famously compared to a "Ferrari" and a "Cadillac." In this analogy, the Islanders' "Ferrari" did not perform as expected in Game 3, tipping the series in favor of the Hurricanes.
