In the third period, Bo Horvat and Simon Holmstrom each found the net, leading the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday evening.

New York's goaltender, Ilya Sorokin, contributed with 18 saves, bringing the team within a point of Washington for the second wild card slot in the Eastern Conference.

Jason Dickinson managed to score for Chicago, which sits at the bottom of the standings, with Connor Bedard assisting on the goal and goaltender Petr Mrazek blocking 27 shots.

The Islanders saw the game level at 1-1 thanks to Horvat's power play goal just over a minute into the third period, and Holmstrom secured the lead for New York midway through the period.

This victory marks the Islanders' first in the latter half of back-to-back games after nine unsuccessful attempts.

The Blackhawks are set to welcome the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
