New York Islanders News & Updates

Mathew Barzal netted a goal via deflection just 84 seconds into the second overtime, propelling the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes during the fourth game of their opening-round playoff matchup.

Alongside Barzal, Jean-Gabriel Pageau found the back of the net for the Islanders, and goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped 42 shots, with 18 of those coming during the overtime periods.

For the Hurricanes, goals were contributed by Seth Jarvis and Stefan Noesen, while goaltender Frederik Andersen recorded 33 saves.

This victory enabled the Islanders to avoid being ousted from the playoffs and shifted the series back to Raleigh for a decisive Game 5 on Tuesday evening.

The decisive goal by Barzal marked the first playoff overtime goal for the Islanders since Anthony Beauvillier's in the Game 6 of the 2021 Eastern Conference finals versus Tampa Bay.

The Islanders' lineup was strengthened by the return of Ruslan Iskhakov, who stepped in for the injured Matt Martin.
