Carolina Hurricanes News & Updates

Jaccob Slavin, a defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes, has been honored once again for his excellent sportsmanship by winning the NHL's Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the second time.

Slavin, who first received the award in 2021, is now the second defenseman to secure it twice, following Red Kelly, who won it four times, three as a defenseman. Additionally, Slavin is the second U.S.-born player to win the award twice, joining Joe Mullen in this achievement.

This year, Slavin emerged as the dominant choice, earning 149 out of 194 ballots and 81 first-place votes. In the final tally, Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson came in second, with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews following in third place.

Despite his high level of play, Slavin incurred only eight penalty minutes throughout the season, leading all players who logged over 1,600 minutes in terms of having the fewest penalties. He also maintained a plus-21 plus-minus rating on a team that conceded the fourth-fewest goals in the league this season.

Alongside his defensive prowess, Slavin contributed offensively with six goals and 31 assists, totaling 37 points over 81 games. He has also become the franchise career leader among defensemen with 223 assists and 272 points in 665 games.
