New York Rangers player Jacob Trouba received a $5,000 fine for elbowing Evan Rodrigues of the Florida Panthers during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.
This penalty is the highest fine allowed under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, with the money directed to the players' emergency assistance fund.
Trouba has a history of similar offenses, having been suspended twice for elbowing and fined three different times, including once for high-sticking earlier this season.
Although initially given a minor penalty, Trouba avoided a five-minute major penalty that would have provided the Panthers with an extended power-play opportunity. The Rangers eventually secured a win in overtime.
After the game, Panthers coach Paul Maurice chose not to comment on the incident, joking about the fine amount on the following Monday.
