Jake DeBrusk played a significant role by scoring two goals and providing an assist as the Vancouver Canucks secured a 4-3 win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. Kiefer Sherwood also contributed with a goal and an assist, while Teddy Blueger and Elias Pettersson added to the team's performance with a goal and an assist, respectively.
Despite the efforts from Ottawa players Claude Giroux, Brady Tkachuk, and Tim Stutzle, each finding the back of the net, the Senators experienced their fifth consecutive defeat. Vancouver's Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves, while Linus Ullmark recorded 17 saves for Ottawa.
One of Vancouver's standout moments was Sherwood's third-period goal, which put them ahead 4-1. Nevertheless, a power-play goal from Giroux and a last effort by Stutzle brought the score closer at 4-3. Ultimately, the Senators were unable to complete their comeback.
The Canucks faced the challenge of playing without Quinn Hughes, who was penalized with a boarding major and game misconduct for a hit on Josh Norris. Meanwhile, Tkachuk faced cross-checking, fighting, and game misconduct penalties during the third period.
On the subject of special teams, Vancouver struggled with only one success in six power-play opportunities, while the Senators made good use of two out of three chances with the extra man. Ottawa notably has a 1-10-1 record when giving up the first goal in a game.
A crucial game moment occurred when the Senators didn't capitalize on a five-minute power play following Hughes's major penalty for boarding. Looking ahead, the Canucks will next play the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, whereas the Ottawa Senators are set to host the Calgary Flames on Monday.
