On the night before his 21st birthday, Wyatt Johnston netted two goals, propelling the Dallas Stars toward a 5-1 win over Colorado, placing the latter on the verge of being knocked out of the competition.
Demonstrating versatile skill, Johnston recorded both a power-play and a shorthanded goal, moving the Stars to a commanding 3-1 advantage in the second-round playoff series. The team is now poised to possibly conclude the series during their next home game on Wednesday.
Contributions also came from Miro Heiskanen, Evgenii Dadonov, and Sam Steel with Jake Oettinger contributing to the win by saving 24 shots.
The Avalanche, operating without the services of the suspended Valeri Nichushkin, found themselves significantly challenged, particularly in the first period where they only managed 2 shots compared to Dallas's 16. Casey Mittelstadt managed to score the solitary goal for the team.
Johnston marked his entry into a select group of NHL players by becoming the eighth individual to score ten or more playoff goals before turning 21.
However, the victory was bittersweet for Dallas due to an injury to forward Roope Hintz, who had to leave the game with an upper-body ailment.
Despite this setback, the Stars continued their impressive performance streak, remaining unbeaten in regular play for nine consecutive games.
