Following a disappointing playoff run that ended in a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers have decided to part ways with general manager Ken Holland.
Team CEO Jeff Jackson stated that Holland's departure was a mutual decision, acknowledging his efforts in enhancing the Oilers' roster and fostering a winning culture.
During Holland's time with the team, he acquired skilled forwards and bolstered the defense, including the integration of homegrown talents like Evan Bouchard and Ryan McLeod.
Though the team reached the playoffs in each of his four seasons, Holland faced criticism for not securing a Stanley Cup.
After a poor start to the current season, Holland replaced coach Jay Woodcroft with Kris Knoblauch, leading to significant improvements in the team's performance.
The Oilers' notable playoff run featured a first-round victory over the Los Angeles Kings and a challenging series against the Vancouver Canucks, culminating in a Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars. They came back from a 2-1 deficit to reach their first Stanley Cup Final since 2006.
In the Final, after losing the first three games to the Florida Panthers, the Oilers managed to win the next three, setting up a decisive Game 7. They ultimately fell short, losing 2-1.
Holland's replacement will inherit a promising roster but must address several key issues, especially with the upcoming free agency period.
The Oilers face limited cap space and have several key players, including Warren Foegele and seven other forwards, approaching free agency. Additionally, two restricted free agents, Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, who were crucial during the playoffs, need new contracts.
