Auston Matthews' quest to notch 70 goals came to a pause in Tampa Bay, overshadowed by Nikita Kucherov of the Lightning etching his name in history with his 100th assist of the season, joining the elite ranks as just the fifth player to reach this milestone.
During the first period, all seven attempts by Matthews were thwarted by the debutant goaltender Matt Tomkins, and a powerful shot from Matthews in the second frame rang off the post. Despite launching a total of 12 shots towards goal, Matthews could not find the net, with Tomkins securing 34 saves in the game.
Toronto's head coach Sheldon Keefe praised Matthews for his significant contributions to the team, well beyond just scoring goals, commending his outstanding performances in recent outings.
Kucherov not only scored in the first period but also assisted Brayden Point in scoring during a power play, marking his momentous accomplishment, a feat he humbly attributed to the support from his teammates and coaches.
For Tampa Bay, Nicholas Paul and Anthony Duclair each recorded a goal and an assist, and Tanner Jeannot also scored, helping to end a three-game skid for the team.
On the Toronto side, goals came from Ryan Reaves, TJ Brodie, Pontus Holmberg, and John Tavares, with goalie Martin Jones making 26 saves. Both teams secured their spots in the playoffs, with Toronto set to go up against Boston, and Tampa Bay facing off against Florida.
Although Matthews did not reach his 70-goal ambition, Coach Keefe lauded his remarkable 69-goal season, acknowledging the support from the team and the importance of his efforts.
