Nikita Kucherov led the way for the Tampa Bay Lightning in their 7-4 win against the Montreal Canadiens by scoring once and assisting on two other goals, standing out as the NHL's top point-getter.
Occupying the initial wild-card position in the Eastern Conference, the Lightning improved their recent performance to a stellar 10-1-1 in their preceding 12 matches. Despite a brief dip in energy in the third period, the team managed to prevail over the Canadiens.
The Lightning's coach, Jon Cooper, commended Matt Tomkins for his exceptional goaltending, highlighting the team's confidence in him, especially during the times Andrei Vasilevskiy was unavailable earlier in the campaign.
Additional scoring for Tampa Bay came from Michael Eyssimont and Brandon Hagel, with Joel Armia scoring twice for the Canadiens. Montreal's defense struggled, working with only five defensemen due to an injury to Kaiden Guhle caused by a Kucherov hit. A late-game collision with Steven Stamkos led to Hagel's exit from the game.
Steven Stamkos untied the game at a 2-2 scoreline with his goal in the second period, which was soon followed by Nicholas Paul's second tally, marking Stamkos's 34th goal of the year.
Next, the Lightning are set to play against Pittsburgh on Saturday, and the Canadiens will be hosting Toronto the same night.
