Salt Lake City UTAH News & Updates

The second day of the NHL draft brought more excitement than the first, marked by a notable trade in which Tampa Bay sent defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to the Utah Hockey Club.

Following this, Utah enhanced their defense by acquiring John Marino from the New Jersey Devils, preparing for their inaugural season in Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay traded Tanner Jeannot to the Los Angeles Kings.

At 26 years old, Sergachev moved to Utah in exchange for restricted free agent defenseman J.J. Moser, center prospect Conor Geekie, a second-round pick in 2025, and a seventh-round pick in 2024 from Tampa Bay. His eight-year contract extension signed in June 2022 has an average annual value of $8.5 million, providing Tampa Bay with financial flexibility to possibly re-sign captain Steven Stamkos.

Utah sought Marino, 27, to further solidify their defense. He is in the fourth year of a six-year contract with a $4.4 million annual cap hit. In return, New Jersey obtained the 49th overall pick and Edmonton's second-round pick in 2025, while giving up the 153rd pick to Utah.

Shortly after, Tampa Bay completed a deal sending Jeannot to Los Angeles in exchange for a second-round pick in 2025 and the 118th overall pick in 2024. Jeannot’s contract has one season left with an average annual value of $2.665 million.
