After Hurricanes Milton and Helene, the Tampa Bay Lightning secured a win in their delayed season opener against the Vancouver Canucks. Despite the excitement, recovery from the storms remained a significant concern during the event.
Many areas still faced challenges with debris, power outages, and non-working stoplights. Lightning's coach, Jon Cooper, spoke about the significant devastation, noting that many people were still staying in hotels, and the negative impact was difficult to see.
The crowd found inspiration in certain moments, like when they gave a standing ovation to Vancouver power company employees who were helping with the recovery. Cooper mentioned that this showed the positive effects of assisting others.
In advance of the game, activities like a food drive were organized at Amalie Arena, where discounted tickets were available. A video tribute played on the scoreboard, honoring both first responders and those affected by the storm.
The Lightning Foundation committed an extra $1 million to aid recovery efforts, bringing the total support to $3 million. Forward Nick Paul appreciated the game as a way to momentarily escape the ongoing difficulties, expressing the relief in coming together and releasing some stress.
While the team's victory highlighted their strength and determination, the lingering effects of the hurricane served as a persistent reminder of the challenges still facing the Tampa Bay area.
