Toronto Maple Leafs News & Updates

Auston Matthews, the forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, was sidelined for the fifth game in their playoff match against the Boston Bruins due to a sickness that has not been specified.

The Maple Leafs are currently down 1-3 in the series.

Matthews has experienced worsening symptoms throughout the playoffs. Sheldon Keefe, the coach, has refrained from providing details on any further injuries.

Keefe mentioned that the decision regarding Matthews' readiness to play would rest with the medical team.

Before the rest of the team practiced in the morning, Matthews was seen skating briefly, marking his first time on the ice after exiting the fourth game in the third period because of his illness.

With Matthews out, Max Domi ascended to the first line, William Nylander adjusted to the second line, and Domi also assumed Matthews' role in the power play.

In their lineup changes, Toronto opted to play Joseph Woll as goalie in place of Ilya Samsonov. With a commendable season as Samsonov's reserve and previous playoff experience, Woll stepped in for this crucial game.

For Toronto to make a comeback in the series, Keefe highlighted the necessity of enhancing their special teams and goaltending performance. Against Boston's consistently chosen goalie Jeremy Swayman and their efficient power play, this strategy is pivotal.

Jeremy Swayman was once again Boston's choice as goalie for the fifth game.
