In the third period, Auston Matthews found the back of the net on a breakaway, delivering a 3-2 win for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Boston Bruins on Monday evening. This victory leveled the first-round playoff series at one win each.
Ilya Samsonov contributed with 27 saves for Toronto, ending a losing streak of eight games to Boston. Contributions also came from Max Domi and John Tavares, who each netted a goal for the Maple Leafs.
For Boston, goals were scored by Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak, while Linus Ullmark stopped 30 shots.
The action moves to Toronto for Game 3 on Wednesday evening.
For the majority of the third period, the game remained deadlocked until a pivotal moment when Domi assisted Matthews, who then secured Toronto's first lead of the series.
After failing to score in the first game, Toronto managed to breach Ullmark's defense three times in the second period and then notched the game-tying goal.
Despite Boston having established a significant lead in the series opener on Saturday, they couldn't maintain their momentum in this matchup.
The Bruins gained an initial advantage in the game with a power-play goal in the first period, thanks to a play set up by Brad Marchand to Geekie. Domi equalized shortly thereafter, but Boston pulled ahead 2-1 just before the first period closed, with Pavel Zacha setting up Pastrnak.
