Toronto Maple Leafs News & Updates

For the first time in his 13-year career, Philadelphia Flyers captain Sean Couturier did not play in a game due to being a healthy scratch. This occurred during a Tuesday night game where the Flyers edged out the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 4-3 victory.

The decision to leave Couturier out of the lineup came from Flyers coach John Tortorella, known for making bold decisions about star players' game time. Despite Couturier having scored 11 goals and amassed 36 points during the season, he found himself on the sidelines and voiced his displeasure over the lack of communication from his coach.

Tortorella, on the other hand, refrained from publicly discussing the reasons behind Couturier's absence from the game, stating it was a matter to be dealt with internally.

In Couturier's absence, players Owen Tippett, Morgan Frost, Travis Sanheim, and Scott Laughton stepped up to score, leading the Flyers to victory. Goalie Samuel Ersson contributed with 27 saves, including a critical one during a short-handed breakaway, solidifying the team's defensive performance.

This victory was significant for the Flyers, propelling them three points ahead of the Washington Capitals and closer to securing the third playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.

Despite a vigorous attempt at a comeback by the Maple Leafs in the third period, Ersson's key saves ensured the Flyers maintained their lead and secured the win.
