The Toronto Maple Leafs made a remarkable comeback from being two goals down to secure a 4-3 overtime win against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.
William Nylander was instrumental in igniting the comeback, scoring a goal late in the third period. His efforts paved the way for Mitch Marner to score a power play goal with just under a minute left in regulation time. John Tavares then clinched the win by scoring during overtime.
A penalty by Nic Dowd turned out to be a significant setback for the Capitals, who experienced only their fifth defeat of the season.
Joseph Woll was impressive for Toronto with 24 saves, while Logan Thompson made 31 saves for Washington but faced his first loss since joining the team last summer.
The win for the Maple Leafs was largely due to the key contributions from their top players during crucial moments. In contrast, the Capitals suffered from a weak performance in the third period.
Looking ahead, the Capitals will begin their three-game road trip on Friday night in Colorado, while the Maple Leafs are set to face the Edmonton Oilers at home on Saturday night.
Additionally, Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the Maple Leafs marked a milestone by playing in his 1,000th regular-season NHL game.
