Joseph Woll, the starting goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs, is experiencing tightness in his lower body and will miss the season opener in Montreal.
Anthony Stolarz will be in goal for the Maple Leafs, with rookie Dennis Hildeby joining from the AHL to serve as backup.
The decision to keep Woll out is a precautionary measure, according to Berube, and he might play on Thursday against New Jersey.
Woll has dealt with injuries before, including a high ankle sprain last season that sidelined him for two months.
During the playoffs, Woll performed well in Games 5 and 6 against Boston but got injured in Game 7, which led to Ilya Samsonov stepping in.
Despite his previous injuries, Toronto signed Woll to a three-year extension worth $10.98 million in July.
Stolarz, who won the Stanley Cup with Florida last year, is expected to serve as a reliable substitute for Woll.
Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews commended Stolarz for his size, intelligence, and ability to anticipate the game.
