Inspired by his respect for Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews delivered a standout performance surpassing that of the seasoned pro in an electrifying match.
With two goals, Matthews increased his tally to 57 for the season, solidifying his quest to achieve the first 70-goal season in more than 30 years. While Ovechkin also put up a commendable show inching closer to surpassing Gretzky's scoring record, it was Matthews who stole the limelight.
Despite Ovechkin reaching a new milestone with his multi-goal effort, drawing him nearer to Gretzky's record by just 50 goals, the Capitals' hopes for a playoff berth dwindled even with his significant contributions.
The strong performance from several Toronto players underscored their ability to bounce back after a previous defeat in Philadelphia. For Washington, Connor McMichael managed to score, whereas contributions from William Nylander, Jake McCabe, Bobby McMann, Tyler Bertuzzi, and John Tavares underscored Toronto's comprehensive win.
The match was marked by intense offensive play and some defensive oversights, yet goalkeepers Joseph Woll and Charlie Lindgren for Toronto and Washington respectively, made pivotal saves for their teams.
In spite of missing key figures like T.J. Oshie and Aliaksei Protas, the Capitals still find themselves just short of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, trailing behind Detroit.
