Montreal Canadiens News & Updates

Auston Matthews' remarkable 64th goal of the season propelled the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens.

Matthews not only achieved his personal milestone of 100 points in a season for the second time but also continued his scoring streak to ten consecutive games. He is projected to score 69 goals, barely missing the notable benchmark of 70 goals last reached in the 1992-93 season. Contributing to Toronto's victory alongside Matthews were Bobby McMann, Matthew Knies, and Max Domi with their goals.

In goal, Ilya Samsonov successfully blocked 24 shots to secure the Maple Leafs' win. On the opposing side, Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield managed to get the puck past Samsonov for Montreal. However, their efforts were insufficient as Sam Montembeault, having conceded four goals from only 12 shots, was substituted with Cayden Primeau.

The game saw no goals in the opening period, but the second period was bustling with activity. Domi, Matthews, Knies, and McMann collectively netted four times for Toronto, establishing a lead. Despite goals from Suzuki and Caufield for Montreal, their comeback attempt fell short.

With this victory, the Maple Leafs have officially secured a place in the playoffs. Conversely, this match marked the Canadiens' second consecutive loss.

Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs are set to face off against the Penguins at home on Monday, while the Canadiens will travel to play against the Rangers on Sunday.
