The much-anticipated showdown between Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby has seen better days. In their latest meeting, which happened to be their second in a week, McDavid led the Edmonton Oilers to a commanding 4-0 win over Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins, who are currently facing a tough phase.
Right from the start, McDavid made his presence felt by scoring the first goal of the game within the opening minute. He also contributed two assists, and Darnell Nurse scored twice in the final period. Goalie Calvin Pickard secured the net with 41 saves, achieving his second season shutout.
This victory marks the Oilers' sixth consecutive win over the Penguins, who have faced defeat in six of their last seven games, with a stark goal differential of 30-10 against them.
This game saw McDavid tallying three points, his 118th occurrence, making him the third highest in Oilers' history to do so, after legends Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri. Despite the team's recent hurdles, McDavid expressed relief over clinching two important points during a demanding part of their schedule.
Next, the Oilers are set to host a four-game series starting Wednesday against Washington, whereas the Penguins are off to Ottawa for a Tuesday match.
