Mike Sullivan, a coach celebrated for leading his team to two Stanley Cup victories, has been appointed to steer the United States team at the 2026 Milan Olympics. He is determined to secure the country's first Olympic gold in ice hockey since the iconic 1980 victory.

In addition to his Olympic responsibilities, Sullivan is set to oversee the team at the Four Nations Face-Off, a precursor event that sets the stage for the Olympic games, featuring top international teams. This tournament marks the return of NHL players to the Olympic scene for the first time since they were absent in the last two Olympics, with their participation confirmed for both the Milan games and the 2030 games in France.

Having served as an assistant coach during the 2006 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, Sullivan brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of international hockey to the table. His leadership aims to harness the talents of American hockey players, including renowned figures like Auston Matthews, to excel on the international stage.

Sullivan, whose leadership led the Pittsburgh Penguins to two Stanley Cup wins, had previously been chosen to lead the U.S. team in Beijing in 2022. However, plans changed when the NHL decided against participating due to scheduling conflicts.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Sullivan said he feels privileged to command such a talented group of players and is eager to tackle the upcoming challenges. Pat Kelleher, the executive director of USA Hockey, applauded Sullivan for his proven leadership abilities and his fervent commitment to the sport in the United States.
