Boston Bruins' head coach Jim Montgomery was visibly upset following the team's 2-1 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the fifth game of the playoff series.
Although the Bruins were ahead 3-1 in the series, their inability to secure a win at their home arena was a source of frustration for Montgomery. He criticized the team's sluggish start and their lack of drive during the game.
During the critical Game 5, Montgomery made a strategic change in the team's lineup, opting to play Matt Grzelcyk instead of Kevin Shattenkirk. This move backfired when Grzelcyk's error in overtime allowed Toronto to score the decisive goal.
Despite potential criticism, Montgomery stood by his lineup decision, expressing trust in his judgment.
This is not the first time the Bruins have faced such a challenge; just last year, they squandered a 3-1 series lead against the Florida Panthers.
On the other side, Toronto's coach Sheldon Keefe highlighted the need to stay focused on the game plan rather than being influenced by the game location.
For Game 5, Toronto adjusted their roster by starting Joseph Woll as the goaltender, who had an impressive game with 28 saves.
It's currently uncertain if Auston Matthews will play in Game 6, though Max Domi has been a strong presence in his stead.
Brandon Carlo is set to make a comeback to the Bruins' lineup in Game 6.
While Toronto's win has injected them with confidence, Keefe admits the series is far from over, yet they now have a successful strategy for winning on the road, drawing from their latest performance.
