In the wake of a recent defeat, the Bruins' head coach, Montgomery, has stood by his decision to opt for Ullmark as the starting goalie over Swayman for the second game of the playoffs.
Ullmark made a total of 30 saves in the game, even though Swayman had shown impressive form in the first game. Montgomery justified his decision by pointing to the critical saves made by Ullmark.
The decision to start Ullmark was kept under wraps until the warm-up session, with Montgomery arguing that withholding such information could provide a strategic advantage.
The regular season performances of both goaltenders were notable, with Swayman securing a 25-10-8 record, a save percentage of .916, and a goals-against average of 2.53, while Ullmark finished with a 22-10-7 record and a 2.57 goals-against average.
Swayman was initially chosen for Game 1 due to his undefeated record against Toronto, but Ullmark's performance in Game 2 was crucial in keeping the Bruins competitive.
Although the Bruins took an early lead, they ultimately fell to Toronto with a score of 3-2. Tavares' goal during a power play evened the score, and Matthews netted the deciding goal, which ended Toronto's five-game losing streak against Boston.
Montgomery pointed out the team's sluggish play and the evident lack of urgency. He plans to focus on elevating the team's performance ahead of Game 3, though he hasn't disclosed who will be the starting goaltender.
In another development, the Maple Leafs' forward Nylander was sidelines from Game 2 due to an injury that has not been specified but is anticipated to rejoin the team for Game 3 in Toronto.
