The New Jersey Devils triumphed over the Washington Capitals with a 5-3 victory in an entertaining game. Paul Cotter had an outstanding performance, scoring twice and upping his season tally to four goals across four matches.
Though Capitals' star Alex Ovechkin didn't record a shot for only the 23rd time in his career, he managed to assist on a goal and contributed six hits. Seamus Casey, Tomas Tatar, and Dawson Mercer found the net for the Devils, with Erik Haula and Stefan Noesen each assisting three times.
The Devils held a two-goal advantage as they entered the final period, but Tom Wilson of the Capitals quickly reduced the deficit. Washington had an opportunity to equalize during a power play but didn't succeed. Dawson Mercer ensured the Devils' win by scoring into an empty net in the last moments.
John Carlson and Dylan Strome were the goal scorers for Washington, while Matt Roy was forced to leave the match due to a lower-body injury.
The offensive display by the Devils and Cotter's impressive form have sparked optimism for the team. Even though the Capitals faced disappointment during their home opener, they marked their 50th anniversary with the presence of over 70 alumni.
A critical point in the match occurred when Capitals goalie Charlie Lindgren lost his stick, which paved the way for Cotter's second goal, giving the Devils a 4-2 lead before the second break.
Washington's third-line forwards conceded three goals to New Jersey. Looking ahead, the Capitals are set to welcome the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, and the Devils are preparing for a Monday matinee against Utah at home.
