Igor Shesterkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins made 29 saves as the New York Rangers began their season with an impressive 6-0 victory against the Penguins on Wednesday.
Chris Kreider scored two goals for the Rangers, who are the current Metropolitan Division champions. The team received additional contributions from Sam Carrick, Alexis Lafreniere, Filip Chytil, and Vincent Trocheck, solidifying their dominance over Pittsburgh.
Filip Chytil scored his first goal in over a year after missing much of the prior season due to a concussion. His goal against Tristan Jarry midway through the game increased the Rangers' lead to 4-0.
Tristan Jarry managed 35 saves for Pittsburgh, as celebrated players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin did not score in their season openers, marking Crosby's 20th and Malkin's 19th.
The Rangers demonstrated their superiority over the Penguins throughout the game, while the Penguins struggled with their power play, missing all three opportunities and allowing a short-handed goal.
A pivotal moment came when Lafreniere and Kreider scored goals just over two minutes apart in the first period, providing Shesterkin with a strong lead and helping him secure his 16th career shutout.
Sidney Crosby reached a milestone by becoming one of only 11 players in NHL history to spend 20 seasons with one team, a record matched this weekend by Washington's Alex Ovechkin.
Next up, the Rangers will face Utah at home on Saturday, and the Penguins will start a three-game road trip in Detroit on Thursday.
