In the second period, Chris Kreider scored a power-play goal that helped the New York Rangers secure a 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.
Kreider's goal broke a 1-1 tie with just over two minutes left in the middle period, with an assist from Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers also saw goals from Alexis Lafreniere, Reilly Smith, and Zibanejad, while Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves.
Dylan Larkin netted Detroit's only goal just before the first period ended. Alex Lyon, making his first start of the season for the Red Wings, saved 24 shots.
Patrick Kane got a warm reception in his first game back at Madison Square Garden after playing with New York last season, assisting on Larkin's goal and marking his 814th career assist.
Artemi Panarin, the Rangers' leading point scorer from last season, notched three assists, bringing his total to seven points across three games.
Igor Shesterkin prevented J.T. Compher from scoring up close late in the second period, maintaining the Rangers' 2-1 lead, which was extended by Smith's goal early in the third period.
Kreider's latest goal is his 307th, placing him third in all-time goals for the Rangers, and his 111th power-play goal, the second-most in franchise history.
The Rangers are set to play in Detroit on Thursday for the second matchup in their home-and-home series.
