The New York Rangers have extended veteran defenseman Chad Ruhwedel's stay by signing him to a one-year deal.
This move creates competition for 23-year-old Zac Jones for a position on the third defensive pairing. The Rangers brought Ruhwedel in from Pittsburgh last March, and he appeared in five games during their Eastern Conference final stretch.
The team lost Erik Gustafsson to Detroit in free agency and has restricted free agents Ryan Lindgren and Braden Schneider. Jones, who featured in 31 games last season, is also vying for a starting role.
Ruhwedel has accumulated 364 NHL games and celebrated a Stanley Cup victory with Pittsburgh in 2017. He was initially signed as an undrafted free agent by Buffalo following his time at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
