The New Jersey Devils are of the opinion that New York Rangers newcomer Matt Rempe should face additional disciplinary action.
Temporary head coach Travis Green mentioned that Rempe deliberately elbowed defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, prompting an investigation by the NHL with a hearing set for Tuesday.
Rempe was penalized with a major penalty and a game misconduct for the blow, leading to Siegenthaler's exit from the game and he did not return.
This incident marks the second time Rempe has been disciplined with a game misconduct for an offense against the Devils. He previously received a match penalty for a prohibited check to Nathan Bastian's head in their last encounter.
Team enforcer Kurtis MacDermid tried to engage Rempe in a fight, which Rempe avoided. MacDermid expressed that Rempe needs to be held accountable for his actions, both during games and outside of them.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette acknowledged Rempe's effective play prior to the incident but expressed hope for Siegenthaler's quick recovery.
In his brief career in the NHL, Rempe has quickly become a contentious figure, accumulating nearly as many minutes in penalties as in play. His aggressive playing style has reignited discussions on the place of fighting in hockey.
MacDermid argued that Rempe's hit on Siegenthaler warrants a penalty, pointing to his physicality and the perilous nature of his game.
