Tampa Bay Lightning News & Updates

Conor Geekie, a forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was handed a one-game suspension during the preseason for leaving the bench to initiate a fight against the Florida Panthers.

Selected as the 11th pick in the 2022 draft, Geekie breached Rule 70.2 by intentionally exiting the bench during a legitimate line change with the aim of starting a confrontation.

This incident unfolded after Florida prospect Josh Davies delivered an open-ice hit on Victor Hedman, the Lightning captain, which led Nikita Kucherov to respond. Following a subsequent line change, Geekie approached Davies and began a fight, which resulted in 19 penalty minutes.

An official from the Department of Player Safety remarked that Geekie's intent was solely to instigate the fight rather than to engage in the play.

Geekie, who is yet to make his debut in the NHL, defended his reaction by claiming he was supporting his teammates.

The Lightning obtained Geekie from the Utah Hockey Club in a trade that involved defenseman Mikhail Sergachev.
