Matvei Michkov is set to be released by his Russian Kontinental Hockey League club, paving the way for his potential debut in the NHL next season with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Michkov was selected by the Flyers in the 2023 draft, but he still had three years left on his KHL contract. Recent reports indicate that behind-the-scenes negotiations have sped up his potential move.
The Flyers dealt with a similar scenario involving goaltender Ivan Fedotov, who was drafted in 2022 but faced military conscription in Russia. After being sent back to the KHL, Fedotov joined the Flyers in March.
Michkov's situation appears to be more straightforward. The 19-year-old forward has the potential to significantly impact the Flyers. The team, which hasn't secured a Stanley Cup victory since 1975, is transitioning from rebuilding to becoming a competitive contender.
