Philadelphia Flyers News & Updates

John Tortorella, the coach of the Flyers, received a two-game suspension and was fined $50,000 for not leaving the bench during a 7-0 defeat against the Lightning on Saturday. His refusal came after a contentious tripping penalty was called on Flyers' defenseman Ronnie Attard, leading to Tortorella's penalties for a game misconduct and a bench minor.

As a result, Tortorella will be absent for the Flyers' forthcoming home games against the Sharks and Maple Leafs. This incident occurred after a ceremony honoring the Lightning's 2004 Stanley Cup victory, a team coached by Tortorella, and his penalty was assessed shortly before the completion of the first period, coinciding with the Lightning's power-play goal.

Tortorella criticized the referees' calls and didn't leave the game as instructed, leading Linesmen Brad Shaw and Rocky Thompson to take his place at the Flyers’ bench. The reason for Tortorella's ejection was unclear to Flyers players, with center Sean Couturier questioning the rationale based on the exchange that took place.

Tortorella is slated to resume his coaching duties for the Flyers in their game against the Bruins the following Saturday.
