The Detroit Red Wings have traded experienced defenseman Olli Maatta to the Utah Hockey Club.
In return, Utah surrendered a third-round pick in the 2025 draft for Maatta, who carries a $3 million cap hit. Maatta will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current season.
This season, Maatta participated in seven games for Detroit, averaging nearly 16 minutes per game while playing in their third defensive pairing.
Throughout his NHL career, Maatta has appeared in 691 games across teams like Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, earning two Stanley Cup victories with Pittsburgh.
Utah has been facing challenges, with a record of 1-4-2 over their last seven games.
The trade was crucial for Utah, who has been dealing with the absence of two injured defensemen.
Sean Durzi had right shoulder surgery and will be out for four to six months. Additionally, John Marino underwent lower back surgery and will be sidelined for three to four months.
Maatta's presence offers Utah a seasoned option to fortify their defensive lineup.
