In Game 5 of the Western Conference Final, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the Edmonton Oilers were determined to capitalize on their power plays against the top-seeded Dallas Stars.
They managed to score twice quickly on power plays in a 3-1 victory, securing a 3-2 series lead and putting them just one win away from the Stanley Cup Final.
Nugent-Hopkins scored his first power-play goal on a rebound just 18 seconds after a penalty in the first period, and added another power-play goal 16 seconds after a penalty in the second period. Stuart Skinner made 19 saves for the Oilers, with Philip Broberg and Evan Bouchard also finding the net.
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each contributed an assist on one of the power-play goals.
Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday night in Edmonton. A win there would send the Oilers to their first Stanley Cup Final since 2006.
In Game 4 at Edmonton, the Stars took an early 2-0 lead in the first 5:29, but then went nearly 109 minutes without another goal. During that time, the Oilers scored eight consecutive goals, tying the game by the end of the first period and ultimately achieving a 5-2 victory.
Wyatt Johnston finally scored for Dallas with 5:51 left in Game 5.
Jake Oettinger recorded 23 saves for the Stars, but their defense struggled to contain Nugent-Hopkins and the other Oilers' scorers.
Skinner made several crucial saves, including stopping a one-timer from Johnston and a close-range shot from Heiskanen during Dallas' only power play late in the second period.
