For the first time, the Florida Panthers are leading the Stanley Cup Final, thanks to the efforts of Sergei Bobrovsky.
The goaltender delivered a shutout against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1, stopping all 32 shots he encountered. Fans chanted in honor of Bobrovsky, who effectively managed the Oilers' powerful offense and strong power play.
At 35 years and 252 days, Bobrovsky is the oldest goalie to achieve a shutout in Game 1 of a Cup Final.
The Oilers had a higher shot count, outshooting the Panthers 32-18, but failed to score on Bobrovsky, who faced the most shots he'd seen in any game of the 2024 postseason last year.
Forward Matthew Tkachuk praised Bobrovsky's performance, noting his critical role in the game.
Florida extended its lead in each period, with goals from Carter Verhaeghe, Evan Rodrigues, and Eetu Luostarinen.
Bobrovsky made several impressive saves, including those on breakaway attempts by Adam Henrique, Mattias Janmark, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. He also stopped a deflection from Leon Draisaitl in the third period.
Despite the Oilers' 18-6 advantage in high-danger shots, they couldn't score.
Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner acknowledged the difficulty of beating the Panthers.
Bobrovsky was especially effective during penalty kills, making six saves. The Panthers' penalty kill ranks second in the playoffs.
Coach Paul Maurice credited Sergei as the driving force behind the team's performance.
Game 2 is set for Monday night, and winning the first game of the series gives teams a 76% chance of winning the series.
