Patrick Roy, coach of the New York Islanders, visited Ball Arena in Denver, where his attention briefly shifted to his retired No. 33 jersey displayed high above. It brought back memories of the two Stanley Cup victories he achieved as a goaltender for the Avalanche, as well as the emotional moment of leaving his role as coach in 2016.
Roy has no lingering regrets about the past. He cherishes his return to the coaching world and has a renewed appreciation for his role.
He attributes much of his personal growth to the time spent away from coaching. Now, at 59 years old, he approaches his position with a fresh perspective and a greater respect for the chance to coach in the NHL.
Although the Avalanche have thrived under the guidance of Jared Bednar, Roy expresses pride in their accomplishments and even texted his former teammate Joe Sakic, who is now the Avalanche president, to extend his congratulations on their Stanley Cup win in 2022.
Roy reflects positively on his time in Denver, particularly acknowledging general manager Pierre Lacroix, who facilitated his trade to Colorado.
Despite his illustrious goaltending career and successful coaching endeavors, Roy underscores the importance of humility and thankfulness in his role. Each game serves as a chance for him to learn and develop further.
Even though the Avalanche maintain a special significance for him, Roy is fully concentrated on the present. He approaches the upcoming match against his former team with the same focus as any other game.
