Coach John Tortorella has announced that Matvei Michkov, the Philadelphia Flyers' standout rookie, will not play in Thursday's game due to being a healthy scratch.
At 19 years old, Michkov is the Flyers' second top scorer with 10 points over 13 games. He is considered a top contender for the Calder Trophy and is a recent arrival from Russia.
Known for sitting young players to make a point, Tortorella thinks Michkov needs to focus on development and that watching the game can be beneficial for him.
Although Michkov earned the Rookie of the Month title for October, he's hit a rough patch, with only one assist in his last five games. The Flyers' general manager, Danny Briere, acknowledges the difficulties that Michkov faces in such a competitive league.
Briere mentions that the expectations for Michkov are modest and anticipates a challenging season for this talented but novice player.
The Flyers are currently at the bottom of the Metro Division with 9 points in 13 games and are coming off two consecutive losses.
