Cam Atkinson is set to enter free agency following the Philadelphia Flyers' decision to buy out the last year of his contract. This move will generate extra cap space for the Flyers, who previously had limited room under the salary cap with just $803,572 available.
Although the Flyers have most of their roster prepared for the upcoming season, they needed more space due to dead cap space from previous deals. They retained half of Kevin Hayes' contract in a trade with the St. Louis Blues and bought out Tony DeAngelo, leading to $5.238 million in dead cap space.
The buyout of the 35-year-old Atkinson, who had an annual salary of $5.875 million, will create $4.320 million in cap space for the Flyers, according to CapFriendly. This will cost the Flyers $2.358 million against the cap in the upcoming season and $1.758 million in the season that follows.
Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere commented that it was a difficult decision to make given Atkinson's achievements and character, praising his exceptional work ethic and professionalism both on and off the ice.
Atkinson, a two-time All-Star, was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021. He scored 23 goals in his first season with the Flyers and managed 13 goals this past season despite recovering from herniated disk surgery. It was his least productive season when playing more than 56 games.
