The Pittsburgh Penguins have made the decision to let go of assistant coach Todd Reirden after the team failed to secure a playoff spot once again.
Tasked with managing the power play unit, Reirden faced challenges in optimizing the performance of high-profile players such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Under his direction, the team's power play efficiency plummeted to 30th in the NHL.
Kyle Dubas, the general manager, expressed that dismissing Reirden was a tough choice yet deemed it essential for the future progress of the team.
This termination signals the conclusion of Reirden's second period of engagement with the Penguins. He initially joined the coaching staff from 2010 to 2014, and after a stint as the head coach for the Washington Capitals between 2018 and 2020, he returned to Pittsburgh.
