Radko Gudas has been appointed as the captain of the Anaheim Ducks, marking the first time the team has had a captain since Ryan Getzlaf's retirement. The 34-year-old defenseman, who joined the team last year, has provided essential veteran leadership to their youthful lineup.
Gudas is the ninth player to serve as captain in Ducks history and the first European since Teemu Selanne co-led the team with Paul Kariya during the 1997-98 season. The Ducks have been without a captain for the last two years.
General Manager Pat Verbeek and second-year Head Coach Greg Cronin are confident that naming Gudas as captain will reestablish a strong leadership framework. Verbeek commended Gudas for his leadership skills and ability to guide younger players.
Having played for five different NHL teams, Gudas has gained significant experience and maturity since his early career. The Ducks, who have missed the playoffs for six straight seasons, are hopeful that Gudas can help change their fortunes.
Gudas joins an exclusive group of Czech players who have captained NHL teams, including Peter Stastny, Jaromir Jagr, Patrik Elias, Bobby Holik, and Milan Hejduk. The Ducks will kick off their regular season on October 12.
