Artemi Panarin scored two goals, Mika Zibanejad contributed three assists, and Igor Shesterkin stopped 35 shots as the New York Rangers triumphed over the New York Islanders 5-2 on Sunday.
Chris Kreider, Vincent Trocheck, and Adam Edstrom found the back of the net for the Rangers, who have claimed three victories in their last four home outings. Kreider kicked off the scoring with a shorthanded goal just over three minutes into the match, while Trocheck furthered the Rangers' advantage early in the second period.
The Islanders narrowed the gap to one goal when Casey Cizikas tallied a score at the 4:38 mark of the second period. Panarin widened the lead again with a power-play goal, but Brock Nelson cut the Rangers' lead with a goal late in the same period.
Edstrom extended the Rangers' lead to 4-2 a little over five minutes into the third period. Panarin later added an empty-net goal to secure the win.
Ilya Sorokin matched Shesterkin's 35 saves for the Islanders, who have faced challenges with scoring this season. The Islanders have experienced four shutouts and managed only one or two goals in five of their 12 games.
The Rangers' record improved to 4-1-1 at home and 4-1-0 on the road as they prepare to host Buffalo on Thursday.
The Islanders' record slipped to 4-6-2, and they are set to face Pittsburgh at home on Tuesday.
