Reilly Smith's decisive goal and Artemi Panarin's two goals led the New York Rangers to a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. With 20 saves, Igor Shesterkin helped the Rangers end their five-game losing streak. Earlier that day, the team had traded their captain, Jacob Trouba.
Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere also played pivotal roles in the Rangers' victory. On the Penguins' side, Blake Lizotte and Philip Tomasino each scored, bringing their four-game winning streak to a halt.
Panarin tied the game during the second period and then secured the lead for the Rangers just two seconds before the period ended. In the third period, Tomasino brought the game to a tie again, but Smith's goal returned New York to the lead. Zac Jones made an important play to maintain the lead later in the same period.
Currently, Panarin is the top scorer for the Rangers with 32 points, having scored in 19 of their games. The Rangers have improved their record to 7-5-1 at Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, the Penguins aim to return to winning form in their upcoming match against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.
