In the game against the Sabres, the Rangers' goalie Igor Shesterkin was taken out after conceding five goals on 12 shots during the second period.
Shesterkin started the game with a 6-2-1 record and a 2.22 goals-against average, but he allowed a goal to Sabres' captain Rasmus Dahlin just 26 seconds from the start.
In the second period, he gave up another four goals, including three in just over two minutes. The goals were scored by Dylan Cozens, Tage Thompson, Jordan Greenway, and Sam Lafferty, leading to Jonathan Quick replacing him in the game.
The Sabres ultimately secured a 6-1 victory.
Rangers defenseman and captain Jacob Trouba commented that things fell apart in the second period. He noted that their goalie had been instrumental in keeping them competitive over the first 12 games, emphasizing the need for the team to improve and allow fewer quality chances.
Despite Shesterkin’s recent difficulties, the Rangers maintain an 8-3-1 record, largely attributed to his excellent performance in earlier matches.
Defenseman Adam Fox admitted the team did not perform well, leaving Shesterkin in a difficult position, which he deemed unacceptable.
As a former Vezina Trophy winner, Shesterkin is in the final year of his contract, with speculation circulating that he could become the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history.
