Carolina Hurricanes News & Updates

During the first game of their playoff series against the New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo was met with unfavorable chants from the audience. DeAngelo, however, stated that he paid no mind to the jeers, keeping his attention squarely on the match.

In a significant moment during the opening period, the Rangers capitalized on penalties against DeAngelo and Evgeny Kuznetsov, scoring twice within 23 seconds through their power play. This was notable as Carolina, having the best penalty kill record during the regular season, yielded two goals from six power play opportunities to New York.

A controversial penalty was called against DeAngelo, which stemmed from a mix-up involving a trip by Martin Necas that was ultimately attributed as a minor roughing penalty to DeAngelo. Carolina's coach, Rod Brind'Amour, voiced his unhappiness with the lack of clarity in the referees' decision.

The Hurricanes faced setbacks from several untimely penalties, including a late third period tripping by Andrei Svechnikov. While Carolina had a history of frequent penalties during the regular season, Jordan Staal suggested the heightened emotions in Madison Square Garden contributed to the early game infractions.

Brind'Amour stood by his team's discipline, stating that many of the penalties were either unintentional or could have been avoided. DeAngelo, looking ahead to Game 2, downplayed the notion that the anticipated intense crowd noise would impact the Hurricanes, pointing out that their home arena also boasted a loud environment.
