In an electrifying final period, the New York Rangers clinched their initial playoff position of the season. Adam Fox was the hero in overtime, finding the net just 36 seconds in, propelling the Rangers to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Alexis Lafreniere contributed with two goals, and Igor Shesterkin stopped 36 shots, marking a personal best for the defenseman.
The triumph allowed New York to extend its lead in the Metropolitan Division by three points over Carolina. The Flyers were initially ahead thanks to goals from Scott Laughton and Ryan Poehling in the second period. However, Mika Zibanejad closed the gap for the Rangers with a goal during a power play.
In the third period, goals from Brodzinski and Lafreniere put the Rangers in front, only for Travis Konecny, the Flyers' top scorer, to equalize with his 31st goal of the season. Although Vincent Trocheck's short-handed goal was balanced out by Owen Tippett, Lafreniere netted another, once more pushing the Rangers ahead. Tyson Foerster managed to equalize for the Flyers, pushing the match to overtime.
This victory marked the Rangers' third consecutive win and improved their home record to 26-9-0. With an assist on Zibanejad's goal, Artemi Panarin hit the 100-point mark for the season, joining an elite group as the seventh player in Rangers history to achieve such a feat.
With nine games left, including five against division rivals, the third-placed Flyers are facing a tight schedule. Rangers saw Brandon Scanlin make his NHL debut, even as they were without captain Jacob Trouba and defenseman Ryan Lindgren due to injuries. Additionally, Alex Wennberg was absent due to personal matters.
