Rick Nash, a celebrated ex-NHL player, has been named the general manager of Canada's men's national hockey team for the forthcoming world championship. The event is set to occur in Prague and Ostrava in the Czech Republic, stretching from May 10 through May 26.
The decision to appoint Nash was reached by a panel that counted the participation of Doug Armstrong, the president of St. Louis Blues, and Ryan Getzlaf, a past player for the Anaheim Ducks. Armstrong expressed a positive outlook towards Nash's dual background as both a seasoned player and an executive, looking forward to collaborating in assembling a team poised to retain Canada's title at the world championship.
At 39 years of age, Nash secured a silver medal at the 2022 world championship in the capacity of assistant general manager for Canada. He is presently the director of player development for the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team with which he previously played.
During his playing days, Nash donned the Canadian jersey at three Olympic Games in 2006, 2010, and 2014, bagging gold in the latter two. Throughout his NHL tenure, he took to the ice in 1,060 games for teams including the Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Boston Bruins, netting 437 goals and accruing 805 points in total.
Canada is slated to kick off its tournament play against Great Britain on May 11.
