In a thrilling match in San Jose, rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini scored just 46 seconds into overtime, leading the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the struggling Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.
William Ecklund contributed significantly with two goals, while Luke Kunin and Tyler Toffoli also found the net for San Jose. The Sharks, showing improvement, have now secured two consecutive wins and boast a 3-1-2 record in their last six encounters. Mackenzie Blackwood was solid in goal, recording 16 saves for the team.
On the side of the Red Wings, Dylan Larkin managed a goal and an assist, with Alex DeBrincat, Marco Kasper, and Michael Rasmussen also providing goals. Unfortunately for Detroit, this game marked their fifth loss in six games, and Cam Talbot was kept busy in the goal, making 29 saves.
Detroit found themselves trailing 4-3 with just 2:06 remaining in regulation play. It was DeBrincat who managed to equalize with a power-play goal, extending the match into overtime.
Celebrini, who holds the distinction of being the 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick, clinched the victory for San Jose during the extra period with his fourth goal of the season, also marking his first career overtime score.
The Red Wings briefly led the game 3-2 midway through the second period, thanks to Michael Rasmussen being credited with a score following an own goal. However, they could not maintain their lead.
The Sharks, who are in a rebuilding phase, have shown remarkable resilience, improving to a 6-5 record after having endured nine consecutive losses to begin the season. Despite trailing for most of the game, they displayed spirited play, especially in the later stages, to secure the win.
