The NHL Players Association has lodged a grievance on behalf of center Ryan Johansen following the Philadelphia Flyers' termination of his contract. The Flyers attributed the termination to a "material breach," asserting that Johansen owed them $8 million for the 2024-25 season, with the Nashville Predators covering $4 million as part of a previous trade agreement.
Johansen had a hip injury confirmed by team doctors, which hindered his reassignment to the AHL. This development took Flyers GM Daniel Briere by surprise since Johansen had participated in 63 games for the Avalanche prior to the trade.
Johansen's agent mentioned that Johansen collaborated extensively with both the Flyers and sanctioned medical professionals, expressing disappointment over the contract termination.
Briere noted that although the contract was terminated, Johansen retains a 60-day window to contest the decision.
Should the NHL and NHLPA fail to resolve the grievance, Johansen has the option to take the case to an arbitrator. Over 13 NHL seasons, Johansen has accumulated 578 points in 905 games.
