Ryan Warsofsky has been appointed as the new head coach of the San Jose Sharks, succeeding David Quinn. Warsofsky, who is 36 years old, has been closely involved with the Sharks' efforts as an assistant coach under Quinn for the last two seasons.
As the youngest head coach in the NHL, Warsofsky will lead a youthful team spearheaded by the anticipated No. 1 draft pick Macklin Celebrini. General manager Mike Grier is optimistic that this leadership will restore the Sharks to competitive form.
San Jose has failed to make the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, holding the league's worst record in the last two. Grier has responded by trading several veteran players and focusing on acquiring young talent through the draft.
Warsofsky is considered well-suited to guide this youthful roster thanks to his strong skills in communication, connection, and player development.
Previously, Warsofsky coached the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, where he led the team to the best regular-season record and a Calder Cup championship in 2022.
Under Quinn's leadership, the Sharks had the NHL's poorest record over the past two seasons, including a league-low 47 points in the most recent season, and allowed six or more goals in 18 games.
Warsofsky has announced that changes will be made, including the introduction of a new system for the players.
Interest from fans has surged since the Sharks won the draft lottery, resulting in record season ticket renewals and sales.
Grier has dismissed rumors about trading captain Logan Couture, who missed a significant part of last season due to injuries.
