San Jose Sharks News & Updates

The San Jose Sharks have made a significant acquisition by obtaining Yaroslav Askarov, considered one of the NHL's top goaltending prospects, from the Nashville Predators. In exchange, the Predators will receive David Edstrom, a conditional first-round pick, and goaltender Magnus Chrona.

Selected 11th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Askarov has agreed to a two-year contract worth $2 million annually with San Jose, which secures his spot on the team until the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.

This trade is a major move in the Sharks' rebuilding strategy, following their recent efforts to draft highly talented prospects and update their team lineup.

Askarov's addition enhances the team's goaltending strength, joining Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek, and creating more competition for playing time as the team heads into training camp.

The Predators decided to trade Askarov after committing to veteran goalie Juuse Saros with a long-term contract, which reduced the opportunities for the young Russian goaltender within the team.

During his time in the AHL, Askarov demonstrated his readiness for the NHL by delivering strong performances, evidenced by an impressive save percentage and several victories, indicating his potential as a future starting goaltender.

Coming off a challenging previous season, the Sharks hope that Askarov's presence will play a key role in their rebuilding efforts and edge them closer to becoming playoff contenders.
