San Jose Sharks News & Updates

In preparation for drafting Boston University center Macklin Celebrini first overall on Friday, the Sharks have made strategic moves to enhance their future prospects.

They traded up to obtain the 11th draft pick from the Buffalo Sabres and soon after, acquired forward Carl Grundstrom from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenseman Kyle Burroughs.

As the winners of the NHL draft lottery for the first time, the Sharks are eager to add Celebrini, who is the Hobey Baker Award recipient, to their roster.

This marks part of the Sharks' long-term strategy to rebuild, especially after missing the playoffs for the past five seasons.

With the 11th pick, they have the opportunity to choose promising talents such as Sam Dickinson, Tij Iginla, Zayne Parekh, and Carter Yakemchuk.

They also signed Boston College center Will Smith, their first-round pick from the previous year, to an entry-level contract.

Grundstrom, who faced an injury-riddled season with 8 goals and 12 points in 50 games, may benefit from increased playing time, while Burroughs offers the Kings a cost-effective defensive option.

The Kings plan to meet their needs with Burroughs, who has a two-year contract worth $1.1 million annually, and have approximately $22.350 million available for free agency.
